The Soundtrack of the Fairelands 2017 by Nyza Stillwater

For the past three years, I’ve been given the wonderful pleasure of providing music for Fantasy Faire, primarily for the Literary Festival tours (for two years). It’s one of the biggest highlights of the year for me, because I get to do what I love: allocate music for a particular environment. This may seem like a simple task, but it is anything but that. I’m so thrilled to have been asked to come back again for my third year of merry music-making.

How does one put music to such a diverse array of environments, in particular for the case of Fantasy Faire? I come into the sims about a week prior to Fantasy Faire’s opening and take pictures of each sim. I usually hang around for several minutes to an hour and then begin searching my extensive music library for music that I feel compliments the vision of the sim builder. Some sims are easier than others, and in particular this year, there was a bit more variety, which lead to a bit of a tougher time for me (a challenge I do enjoy taking on though!).

I was able to play music for the 5:00 pm SLT Lit Fest region tour time slot, and with my current schedule, I was able to play 7 out of the 10 total tours (that’s roughly 12 hours of music for this year). Each playlist takes anywhere from an hour to 6 hours to create, because I am searching for music that conveys the ‘feeling’ of the sim. I also use the tidbits of each sim’s story to try to find the right setting and tone. Believe it or not, half the time is simply deciding which tracks ‘make the cut’!

Near the end of this year’s Fantasy Faire, I also got to play my 2-hour “Soundtrack for the Fairelands” playlist, which is essentially a compilation of music tracks for EACH sim. This is the third year in a row I’ve been given permission to showcase this all-encompassing set. This is actually my favorite set to put together, because it showcases the diversity of music that can be played as well as the diversity of the sims at the Faire. I also have dedication tracks for the staff, the Fairelanders, and to those who are in the fight against cancer, with a two piece epilogue as we prepare to take in the closing of the Fairelands. At the end of this message, I’ve included a sampling of the tracks that correspond to the ‘soundtrack’ for each sim, in my mind.

On behalf of all the DJs who have worked hard to showcase their visions for Fantasy Faire this year through the power of music, with special thanks going out to Radio Riel for providing the stream for us, and the Fantasy Faire staff for their ceaseless support, I’d like to thank one all for listening!
