Meet Our Sponsors: The Lost Unicorn Gallery

Natalie Montagne, the owner and curator of the Lost Unicorn Gallery.

Natalie Montagne, the owner and curator of The Lost Unicorn Gallery and the sponsor of The Spirit Pool, shares with us news about the gallery, her favourite fantasy soundtrack and her reasons to return to sponsoring the Faire.

This is your third year sponsoring Fantasy Faire. What made you return and do it again?

I wanted to contribute and be a part of this amazing event once again and would like to continue doing so as long as I’m able. After going through cancer myself and also many I know, Relay For Life is near and dear to my heart. How could I not be a part of what Fantasy Faire is all about? Not only is it my favorite genre…FANTASY, it’s all about raising money to fight against cancer…this is my number one reason for coming back.

The Gallery in Winter

What have you been up to the last year? What is new at The Lost Unicorn Gallery?

The last year went by so fast, it’s been a whirlwind! We opened our new sim, housing the gallery and forest sanctuary. For the most part, I’ve been working on a few minor additions to my sim, Lost Unicorn, and also of course, showcasing artists at the gallery. The sim and gallery went white for winter this year and it was so gorgeous. Our sim designer, Nessa Zamora, did a wonderful job. It’s all green again now and just as lovely as ever. We have added some new in house artists to the gallery this year and showcased many, too. We are still involved with the Enchantment events every 3 months, sponsoring the photo contest and displaying work there. It’s so much fun and these events are fabulous. I plan to expand the gallery this summer and make a few changes. I want to be able to display more artwork and also display what we have in a larger size if possible.

The Gallery Overlook

What are you bringing to the Faire this year?

We will have the sim sponsor store on The Spirit Pool sim this round and plan to include as many in house artists’ artwork as possible and also a few others. I plan to try and sell at least 1 or 2 pictures per artist and as always, ALL profits will go to Relay for Life.

What would your favourite fantasy soundtrack consist of? Does the Lost Unicorn Gallery have a theme song?

Oh my, so many songs. I would have to say my soundtrack would consist of the music from Lord of the Rings/Hobbit series, Star Wars, Game of Thrones, Enya’s Greatest Hits, Lord of the Dance/Riverdance, Frozen, Beauty and the Beast and the list goes on 🙂 The gallery doesn’t have its own theme song, but we do play a station on the sim that is so epic and beautiful. I get so many comments about it and I never get tired of listening to it. It’s all music and has a lot of soundtracks and much more. It’s the station I always go back to and play most all the time.

What are you looking forward to most this year in the Fairelands?

I always look forward to the hustle and bustle of Fantasy Faire! I love to explore all the amazing sims and of course, shop shop shop! One thing I wish…is it would last longer!!

Thank you, Natalie, for taking the time to chat with us, and thank you for bringing more beauty and fantasy visions to the Fairelands!

Awaken the Secrets of Echtra

Echtra 2

The land is stuck in time. There is no summer nor is there any winter. There is just a grey emptiness hanging over the once busy town of Echtra and the surrounding moorland. And what of the legends that tell of a great sleeping dragon under the hill the town is built. Will the secrets of this once thriving community be revealed and if they can be discovered exactly who will awake?

This is your second year sponsoring Fantasy Faire. What made you return and do it again?

Oh, going forward, I’d love to continue with the involvement of the gallery at Fantasy Faire for many years to come! Cancer Awareness and RFL are very close to my heart, as I know many who have suffered from this horrific disease and I am a 4 year breast cancer survivor myself. I also love anything fantasy, so that coupled with the purpose of having this event makes it even that much more inspiring to participate!

What have you been up to the last year? What is new at The Lost Unicorn Gallery?

We have been busy at the gallery the past year. I still change out all the pictures at least every 2 months or so along with showcasing an artist once a month as much as possible. We showcase our member artists, but also bring in other artists that produce fantasy artwork. We have added a few new member artists too. The gallery has also been invited to show pictures and sponsor the photo contests for the last three Enchantment events which has been so much fun and I am honored to be a part of these wonderful events 🙂

The new Lost Unicorn Gallery

As far as some exciting and more recent news, the gallery is moving to a new FULL sim (something I’ve wanted to do for a long time) which will not only house a new gallery build, but will be a beautiful fantasy forest created by the amazing Nessa Zamora! I just told her what my vision was for the forest and she has done an incredible job making that come to life. It will all be opening very soon! The fact I’ve been working on this has made me fall behind on a new showcase, so we haven’t had one in a couple months. However, once we get the new setup all finished and ready, we will start with them again along with many other events 🙂

The new gallery is now open and can be visited here: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Faerie Tale/204/75/125

What are you bringing to the Faire this year?

I’m so excited because we are sponsoring one of the sims at Fantasy Faire this year….Echtra sim! It has a Norse/Viking theme which I love. We will have a much larger space so will be able to display more pictures and also sell more for the cause. The artists and I all prefer to donate 100 percent of any profits to the cause, so even better 🙂

What are your favourite fantasy realms?

Hmm my favorite fantasy realms? So many! I love artwork with unicorns (my favorite), faeries, dragons, elves, and the list goes on. This is why I have several groups in Flickr so I’m able to enjoy everyone’s amazing pictures! I also love all the LOTR and Hobbit books and movies, they are my favorites. As far as fantasy worlds in SL, I love beautiful forests, they are my favorite. There are so many new sims I haven’t been able to explore, but need to. Two of my favorites are Telrunya and Chakryn Forest.

What are you looking forward to most this year in the Faire?

I always look forward to that “feeling” of excitement in the air. There’s always so much going on at once on all the sims during Fantasy Faire. All the people in their fantasy garb, the sims and their scenery, shopping, shows….I’m looking forward to it all!! Thank you for having the gallery back!

Thank you, Natalie, for taking the time to talk with us. Thank you for bringing more magic into the Fairelands!

Natalie Montagne, the owner of the Lost Unicorn Gallery.

Natalie Montagne, the owner of the Lost Unicorn Gallery, shares what it is like to own and curate an art gallery in Second Life, what made her become a sponsor of Fantasy Faire and what she loves most about fantasy.

This is your first year sponsoring Fantasy Faire. What made you decide to become a sponsor?

I’ve always loved everything about Fantasy Faire, from its amazing support of Relay For Life to all the original creations designers make just for the Faire; from the unbelievable builds of the sims created especially for the event to the overall spirit and lively atmosphere Fantasy Faire creates in all of us that love it. What’s not to like?

I’ve been in SL for almost ten years now. After owning several homes and then a lovely fantasy forest sim for several years, I started The Lost Unicorn Gallery just last July. I love it and finally feel I have a way of contributing to the Faire. Relay For Life is also very near and dear to my heart as I’ve known several who have fought or passed on from cancer. I am also a breast cancer survivor myself of three years, so anything I can do to help stop this tragic disease, even in some small way, is a good thing.

What made you decide to start a fantasy art gallery in Second Life? How is it like running one?

I’ve always had a love for artwork picturing faeries, elves, unicorns, dragons and many other fantasy characters…I’m drawn to them. I’m also a huge fan of The Lord of the Rings series and anything in that realm. I enjoy the beauty of all kinds of fantasy art and have also always enjoyed taking pictures in Second Life.

I heard there was a large Second Life community within Flickr so I joined back in 2009. After that, the rest was history as they say! I was amazed to find all the gorgeous and exceptional talent on the site, especially seeing Second Life pictures edited and brought to life like they were. Of course when mesh came along, it all got even better. I began getting more involved in taking pictures myself. I also opened a fantasy sim called Elven Realm in 2010 and housed a small gallery above the sim. After all the time I’d been in SL, I had finally found my niche. I just love discovering new artists and beautiful artwork to share with others. I display the work of artists who are not well known, up and coming artists and tenured to give them all the exposure they deserve. The added benefit is I get to enjoy walking the gallery every day if I wish to view all the talent that makes the gallery gorgeous!

Curating the gallery is something I truly love to do. Yes, it can be hard work, especially with artist exhibits held once a month along with monthly events and gallery rotations. However, it’s work I love to do! I have really enjoyed working with the group of 39 artists who show in the gallery (I rotate their work every 2 months), they are all wonderful and very supportive. Many have become great friends. I’m very passionate, particular and detail-oriented about what I do, but love every minute of it.

What are you bringing to the Faire this year?

We normally don’t sell pictures at the main gallery, they are on display only for the enjoyment of guests. The artists had the option to sell, but decided not to at this time. Selling their work at Fantasy Faire is a first, but they were so excited and happy to do it for Relay For Life. Either the artist or I chose one picture for each to sell in the store we have at Faire. 100% of all sales from all of the pictures will go directly to Relay For Life.

The gallery is also sponsoring the May Day Masked Ball on May 1.

What calls you to fantasy? When was the first time you encountered the genre and realized you enjoyed it?

I’ve loved fantasy since I was very young. I grew up loving faerie tales, unicorns and anything magical. I’ve also had a great love for writing stories and drawing since I was little. I love creating things and using my imagination. As they say, every picture tells a story and I believe this is true. I have incorporated this theme in the gallery with books and reading nooks throughout. I am drawn to the beauty of fantasy art and all it entails. My goal is to share this beauty with others and at the same time show off the talents of so many deserving artists.

Do you have a favourite Faire memory? What are you looking forward to most this year?

I think my favorite memory or what I always think of when Faire comes around another year is the upbeat and lively mood of all those involved and who attend. Its almost the feeling of Christmas with all the shops, events, music on the sims, what everyone is wearing, crowds and overall spirit. This year I’m more excited than I’ve ever been since I’m a part of it all!

Thank you, Natalie, for taking the time to talk with us. Thank you for bringing more magic into the Fairelands!
