Words of power are coming to the Faire for our third Literary Festival (LitFest)!

FF17_LITFEST_Poster

Over the ten days of the LitFest, there will be talks by authors, discussions, creative writing sessions and performances.

Our headline speaker this year is the very popular real word fantasy writer, Seanan McGuire, author of, among others, the October Daye series of modern fantasy.

This year we will again by emphasising creation, as a number of the leaders of creative writing groups in Second Life bring their regular events to the Faire, and welcome newcomers who want to join in with such events.

And there is our own special daily story and poetry writing challenge. Every day, we will be inviting you to put your Fantasy Faire experience into words. The Faire is brimming with stories: breathtaking builds and fantastical creations designed to touch your heart and soul. What stories do they inspire in you?

We will be repeating our very successful Fantasy Faire LitFest Tours, leaving daily from our home base to explore the Fantasy Faire Continent. We will be seeking the stories of the Fairelands – along with special secret places and details, and each day a Guide will lead a tour to one of the Fantasy regions. Explore … and open yourself up to what inspires you, what detail or overall impression sparks a poem, micro-fiction, or short story.

And you will be able to hear some of the stories and poems that people wrote last year, as we have turned this into special recordings that will be broadcast on Fantasy Faire Radio.

With only ten days, our Tours this year focuses on just ten of the regions, but we hope you’ll be inspired by other regions too, to share stories. And to lead that, we will have special explorations of the other regions too.

We are also planning to have some fascinating discussions with a number of different people, and we’ll have authors reading their works.

We also have talks from people involved in the stories that underlie two very different regions. and storytelling with some of the best known storytellers in Second Life.

We will have Open Mic sessions led by well known poets and writers, and sessions which open with reading but which invite the audience to contribute too.

And then there is a performance of a magical production of Much Ado About Nothing, by the Faireland Players.

Every year, we feature a special author for the LitFest, In our first year it was Terry Pratchett, last year (the 400th anniversary of his death), we celebrated William Shakespeare. This year on Wednesday April 25th, we shall be celebrating the great J.R.R.Tolkien.

***Fairelands Service Announcement***

We interrupt this scheduled story to announce that the story will not end today. We(as in me, myself and I) have gotten many messages, both to IMs and by Notecard, that you did not want the “Swim with Me” story to end with the Faire. It was always the plan, that this was going to be an exclusive story series, done for the faire, allowing for similar interests and lore to flow in. It was a unique way to cover some of the items from the faire, at the end of each story.

Due to public response, it has been decided that the story will go on, or a story within the same mer realm, continued in much the same format , in short little snippets, with various info and item coverage at the end of each post. You will be able to follow the rest of the story, beyond this point, on the blog Pixel Mythos. A special page has also been created, so that you can view all the “Chapters” in one spot.

It is the hope that the particular story, with these characters, will continue on again, here, come Fantasy Faire 2017.

***This has been a Fairelands Service Announcement***

Helena Stringer - Fantasy Faire 2016 - Swim with Me - The Merge - 1

Riletta and her new friend, Big Blue, had been traveling for many Lights now, and the call, which came twice a day, so powerful, finally seemed to be getting closer. Having a Blue Whale nearby was handy as he could accurately calculate the distance of the sound waves. It wasn’t a skill she acquired, sorting out long distance vibrations, carried through the currents.

Swim with Me – A Queen’s worries

1

Talise stared at the crystal encrusted shell sitting on her desk, waiting for anything, even the faintest glow. Beside her, her ever present advisor, a seahorse of the of the palest lilac hue, just kept smiling at her. It was the most annoying thing about Cambreyan, anything could be happening, and he always had his ever present smile.

“You know your daughter, she will contact you when she has something solid to talk about. I wouldn’t think, even with how fast she is, that she got very much father than the rest of the scouts did. Maybe a half a Light farther. We got to remember this call came from very far off.”

“Oh, I know. I think it was the other morning chats with those of the closer seas, that got me worried. There have been many mer who have not been able to resist, and a lot of them are perishing to predation. They seem to go into a trance, and all they can think about is finding the source of the call. I would really like to know why it does not work on the sharks and other deep water nasties.”

“Ah, they are so one minded, most of the time. It’s blood and tear. Only near breeding season do they even think of anything else, and with the way they fight their mates, it’s still mostly blood and tear in the end.”

“So you think there is just not enough room to care, in those little brains of theirs?”

“Yes, that is exactly what I think. Do you remember the tale, of that far off Sea, where the mer once had sharks as their guards. It was rumored to be the most feared mer queendom ever. Then one night, while all the mers were safely resting in their kelp, the sharks couldn’t take the domestic life anymore, and ate them all. They had no other form of militia, so they were utterly defenseless.”

“Oh, yes, I remember that tale, Grandmar would tell that one to me when I was being a bad little fry. She would later remind me of it when she started to teach me on military matters and strategy. She certainly thought it had enough merit to believe in it.”

“You Grandmar was never one to toss a tidbit of information away, just because she did not see it with her own eyes. She liked to weigh everything, and even those she did not think true, she still recorded.”

“Cambreyan, that just gave me the most wonderful idea! We should head off to the vaults, maybe she wrote something down in all her years, that was similar to what we are dealing with now. You know she liked to translate the old slates, maybe she did find something, once.”

“Now that, my Queen, seems like the perfect idea.”

2

The Queen and her advisor left her quarters, venturing outside the palace, to venture to the vaults. The Vaults were located not within the palace, as a Grandmar far far past in the line had decided it was a silly place to store all the great treasures of a queendom. It is the first place usurpers covet, the first place invaders go to. This is why there is a false vault at the palace, holding lesser treasures, though still lovely.

The greatest treasures of Talise’s realms were that of Knowledge. It seems her ancestors were very keen on chronicling everything that happened, in Lights past. Hidden amongst these writings were also enchanted objects, created by some of the most powerful seawitches of her line.

The reason for these being so treasured and secreted away, was simply that they hadn’t had a witch in the family for a few centuries. It is a hereditary thing, and while it normally skips a generation or two, with their line, it seemed to have just fizzled out. With no way to restore these items, if they need recharging, repair, or remaking, they are left one of the most guarded secrets.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They finally came upon the spot, a spot so ordinary, for the treasures held within. It had grown into a wonderful reef, with time, which was the intent. Talise guided them to the false rock that served as a barrier to the entrance. Only her blood, and the blood of her daughter, could invoke the rock to move. Once inside, she and Cambreyan went right to the place her Grandmar often sat, a beautiful shell seat carved in slopping waves. It is said to have once been a throne room chair, and it sure did have the flair.
Piled around it were stacks of tomes, all lovingly worn. It was a hard thing, to keep the written word under the waves, where ink and parchment would dissolve in but a few days. These tomes were another sort of enchantment, each carrying it’s own bubble of sorts. When one placed their hands within, they would instantly become dry, and the ink and parchment were protected from the watery elements.
“Well, I am not sure exactly were to start, so I’d say pick a stack, you can flip the pages with your tail, and I’ll pick a different stack. Having both eyes on these will make shorter work of the task.”
“Thank you my lady, for entrusting me with so precious of a task.”
“Oh shove it Cambreyan, haha, I just don’t want to be the only one with sore eyes tonight.”
“As you wish,” he said, as he picked a stack not too far from his queen. No one outside the royal merline has ever set eyes on what was written within these tomes. It was a very rare gift his queen had bestowed upon him, and he was not one to forget such gifts easily.
With both of them settling down to their task, each intent on finding some source of information of this unique call, each hoping for an answer that might save them all, a quietness ensconced itself into the chamber.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Much light had passed, when Cambreyan finally let out an excited noise.

“What is it, what did you find?”

“I am not totally sure if it is connected, but it surely is the first thing I have found that might be. Your Grandmar found some passages that talk about a place, far out in the oceans, with no lands nor isles in sight. There are deep, deep waters, and it is ensorceled in strong magical mists above the waters. It is said that but once a year, lands arise from the depths, and portals to other realms appear. All manor of creatures, not of our waters nor land, arrive there, through the portals. These lands only stay a short while. The mists and the oceans eventually eat them back up, closing off the portals for another year. When the lands do come back, they are forever changed, taking new forms.”

“Now that seems rather far fetched.”

“It might have been why that wasn’t one of the tales she ever told.”

“So magical lands, appearing out of the oceans, portals, strange critters. What does that have to do with our call?”

“Well . . . there is a notation as to the general direction of where this all happens. Can you guess what is also coming from that direction?”

“The Call.”

“Yes. It also says here, that the area was guarded by a Kraken. A Fallen God was given to it as sacrifice, and it ate him right up. The Fallen God transformed, within the bowels of the beast, to re-emerge as a sort of watcher of the waters, with the Kraken now at his command. I wonder, with no creature to guard this magical place, would something more sinister have found it’s home there?”

“You think if something did move in, that is why the call has come this far? Is it the one doing the calling, or is there something or someone else sending it out? There are too many questions, and never enough Light. Is there anything else written?”

“The only other information here is just that the lands appear each year, so that there can be a collective mass of beings to help heal those who need healing. They pool their talents and resources, from the many places they call home, for this one goal. They also give time to remember the ones who have been lost.”

“We all lose someone, at sometime, what could possibly be so bad, that so much magic would be expended to create such a place, for such short of a time. What is the point of these lands? I can see why Grandmar never told me of this tale.”

“The last thing is says, is the single word; Hope. The rest of the tome is blank. Maybe it was something your Granmar was still working on. Maybe we should start sorting though the slates.”

“There isn’t enough time for that. You can’t read them, and I am very slow at it. I need to get to the islands, I need to talk to the birds. I think what we need is a Thunderbird. We need something fast, even faster than my daughter. I wish the winds still spoke to our kind.”

“It is hard to keep friends with the winds, when the waves fight them so.”

“This is true. Come now, we have a trip to make.”

As the Queen and her Advisor head off to the nearby islands to find their feathered allies, a dark blackness spreads into their waters. It’s tendrils seek new victims, for it is forever hungry. It feeds of the source of life, in that of each victim. It sometimes slowly toys with it’s food, taking over bits and pieces of their systems, before pulling every last spark it can. Sometimes it can’t wait, and just quickly attacks, riddling their bodies with growths, each one making it more able to collect the power of that life so much faster. It has a name, but this world does not know it, it’s denizens so bright and pure. Such feast it will have, for they have not the knowledge to stop it.

A Vacation to the Fairelands

After his 315th video game, as an extra on level 14, with designation number 5134, Thembones decided it was time for a vacation. His girlfriend, Banshee, worked in the same game, she was on level 2, with a designation number of 72. How she landed that, he will never know. It was probably the fact that she was a screamer. They were not the easiest to find. Most of the time your jaw rots off, after hobbling around as much as they did.

Thembones headed to “HR”, haha, that always made him laugh, which was an unmarked grave at the back of the level 1 map.

Samantha, a perky little NPC that was dressed up as a cheerleader, answered his knock at the gravestone, thrusting her arm up out of the loose dirt, and grabbing his good leg and pulling. He felt such theatrics were better served for the game itself, but he wasn’t the one running the show, so who was he to judge.

“Bob! What are you doing here? Need another bolt put in that hip of yours?”

“Uggg marawable mump ogglet.”

“Oh, I know your name, you know I like pulling your leg, figuratively at least. Don’t actually want to pull it, since you seem to have such a hard time keeping it on. What brings you down to my unhallowed hovel?”

“Mrargle ugg grwaaaa.”

“A vacation you say . . . . I think I have just the right thing for you. It only happens once a year, and is totally different than anything you have ever known. That is sort of the point of a vacation though, isn’t it?”

“Habgamma grarllll.”

“Ah, she is going too. Hmmmm not sure Upper Management will enjoy that, she is such a hit. You guys have both worked really hard for our franchise. I think I can give you until the 2nd of May off. It really isn’t that many days. Here is your travel package. You will have to use the depixilation portal on Level Z to get to your Travel Terminal. From there the Hostess will make sure you end up where you need to be.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thembones and Banshee arrived to their vacation spot, fairly unscathed. They seemed to have landed in the water, but since they didn’t breath anyway, what did it matter.
Neither one of them have ever been depixilized for that long before, it was a an odd feeling, even for their kind.
Looking to shore, set before them was 14 interlocking worlds, in another gaming universe, spread out and ready for their exploration. He looked at Banshee, saw her crooked “smile”, and knew this was the perfect place. He had heard there was such delicacies as fairy brains here. He just could not wait!
They lumbered out of the waters, ready for their new adventure.
So began the vacation of two Zombies.
Throughout this post I have used the Linden Labs Default Zombie avatars, which are in our ingame Inventory Library. I had always wanted to try out a photobombing, or I should say, Zombombing, with these avatars. I was rather tame, because photobombing actual people is hard on the fairelands, everyone seems to run everywhere.
I was inspired to do this by a group, which is on Flickr, which I like to visit for laughs.
Feel free to join Thembones and Banshee on their adventures in the Fairelands. I am sure people will find it amusing to see zombies running about. I would love to see your take on what you think a zombie would do at the faire.
You can visit and join the Linden Lab’s Mesh Avatars Flickr Group and be sure to add any photos you take to the Official Fantasy Faire Flickr Group as well. Please feel free to comment on this post, if you do end up taking the mantel, and go off enjoying the faire as a zombie.
The Fairelands await your Visit!
Powercourse
Helena Stringer - Fantasy Faire 2016 - Powercourse - 1
Photo shot at Fantasy Faire on the Lucentia Sim
Some beings just can’t help it, and are drawn by the power. It swirls elegantly, butterflies forming as manifestations, fluttering in looping rings around the core crystal. Darkness and Light are trapped within, combating for supremacy, an ever present struggle mimicking that of the world.Few can harness but a fraction of the power within. Few can gently glide a finger across the crystal, and come back unscathed.
It is a treasure, this crystal, and all it’s power. It is also a bit of a curse, the denizens of the area now being forced to not only maintain their own lifestyle, but protect and take care of this embodiment of power. It protects them, and they protect it.
A few times every century, the power trapped within starts to leak. This attracts all manors of nasty creatures, from the depths of the waters the crystal gently whirls above, to far off lands, so different from those here.
In these times, they ask for help, gathering their strongest allies, from far and wide, to siphon off portions of the power.
Zet’streya was one of the few who could touch the power full on, and has touched multiple times over the years. She is very old, though her body may seem youthful and toned. Not much is known of her kind, other than to her people. It is said she holds a part of the divine, and she has a hand in both side, to better able her in restoring the balance of darkness and light. She also holds a piece of every creature of her homeland, big or small, within her, which leads to why she has such a unique appearance, even to her own people. It is also said she looked fairly normal(by her peoples terms) when she was but a child, a priestess of her peoples Deities.
When the time is near, and the call goes out, she always comes. Maybe once, in the years past, someone knew the reason why. Her people say she has never traveled to any other land, for any other reason.
A festival is always held, for she is one of the few that people enjoy to see come siphon the crystal. She is kind, even though she never talks. She seems to enjoy children and the small sprites and fae the most.
The time always comes, when she cannot help herself any longer, and she leaves the square, alighting with wing, to fly to the crystal. This is what the people wait for.
For some who can harness the power, they capture the power rings that flow outwardly from the core crystal. Zet’streya goes right to the core, touching it with hand, and all manor of light encases her. It is different than that of the manifestations the crystal seems to make. It is like a beam of light, hued nearly to her own colour, with sparks that burst off wherever it touched her. As she siphons, it gets brighter and brighter, until she seems to be encased in fireworks.
The people cheer, beholding the wonder that is she. Some only ever get to see this once in a lifetime, so it is a rare wonder to behold.
Once she harnesses all she can hold, she drops to the water, walking upon the surface, as she heads back to shore. If anyone ever paid that much attention, you could surmise it is the only hint as to how tasking it is to gather that excess power. I am sure she would fly, if she could, at that point.
She stays with us, for a week or so, after that. It is said she wants to make sure others don’t overly collect from the crystal, once they arrive. It is said she does it to protect us, in the short time she is away from her own homelands. Some even whisper is it the crystal, that keeps her here, until she can unbind herself from the seductive threads or power.
Whatever it may be, the help is always there, and we are grateful. Interwoven is she, with our crystal, with our people. Horror the day that she does not heed our call. We say a prayer, a small thing,
Crystal Powercourse,
tendrils build and grow,
oh, the powerful force,
eager to let go.
Lady of Farlondun
heed our call,
oh, winged one,
so we do not fall.
Long Live Zet’streya.
Swim with Me – The Start of the Journey
Helena Stringer - Fantasy Faire 2016 - Swim with Me - The Start of the Journey - 1
Far out in the ocean depths came the call, which was echoed far and wide. When it reached the ears of Riletta, she felt compelled to find it’s source.
She was a fast swimmer, her merline having some of the largest fins on their tails. She traveled far, but as the waters became murkier, and the bio-luminescent creatures started to come out of hiding, she knew she needed to find a place to rest.
She came upon a friendly blue whale, not too far out of adolescence, but old enough to have been run off by the females of his former pod.
“Tala, fellow creature of the waves,” said the Blue Whale in his melodic singsong voice.
“Alo, my cousin, how goes the currents in your place of rest?”
“Oh, they are fairly calm, if you have need to stop. If it pleases you, you may join me during the dark time. Just climb up on my fin. It is shallow here, I can surface for breath, without disturbing you much.”
“That is perfect. I will join you, for I have traveled far this bright time.”
“I traveled through the bright time myself, following a strange call. I did not know what creature could have made something ripple through the waters like that. We whales have somewhat of the same ability, but the feeling of it, it felt so far. It also felt important.”
“I too follow the call. I was tasked by my brethren to find out what it could be. I have asked many along the way, this bright time, and all but the sharks seem compelled to find the source. No one seems to know what it is.”
“The sharks will come soon enough, they will have to. They must follow their dinner. I will keep you safe for the dark time. Come the bright, you must be careful. There are so few of your kind left in our waters. Don’t become a tasty snack!”
“I wasn’t planning on it, but it is good advice, the sharks wont be the only thing to have to start following those who follow the call. There are bigger things out there, that lurk in the depths. You must be careful too. I have heard tales of things that would find even one as large as yourself a tasty morsel.”
“Ah, you flatter me, with this talk of largeness. I am at least large enough to make a good bed and dark time guardian.  Come here now, and rest.”
Helena Stringer - Fantasy Faire 2016 - Swim with Me - The Start of the Journey - 2So Riletta took one last look into the dark, taking comfort in the glow of the creatures just starting their wakeful journeys. Do even they, the small ones, hear the call?
It was something else she would have to find out. Her mother would want to know all she could possibly know.  Stroking the crystal encrusted sell attached to her belt, knowing she will have to report some sort of finding back to her mother with it the next bright, she settled in on the pectoral fins of her new friend.
Long into the dark, some shades darker from when her slumber started, the call drifts out again, flowing over every creature of the waters, even those better left untouched.
Fairelands Junction: Lost in Dreams
Fairelands Junction
Fairelands Junction – picture by Alisaundra Andel
Each year in the spring, Junction stretches and awakens, reshaping and unleashing the magic she has harbored through the winter back into the Fairelands, creating a gateway into magical realms both terrifying and glorious.
This year was different. Spring came in, impatiently attempting to wake Junction from her slumber, to scrub away the cold of winter, but to no avail. Junction rolled over in her dreaming, letting loose only little puffs of magic. Spring struggled, thrusting roots into the soil and tendrils toward the sky, weaving itself into a shambles of bushes, brambles and thickets–but without love and the magic to sustain it, Junction dreamt, and spring slipped into silence.
Now Junction lies sluggish and apathetic beneath her withered blanket, and spring wonders if she will ever awaken, or who can help break into her dreaming…
