Vote for the King, Queen and Chancellor of Fantasy Faire 2017!

It’s now a month to go before the start of this year’s Fantasy Faire – so if you are looking for ways to fill the time, perhaps you can begin to think who you would like to nominate for the positions of King, Queen and Chancellor of Fantasy Faire!

The King, Queen and Chancellor of Fantasy Faire in 2016!
The King, Queen and Chancellor of Fantasy Faire in 2016!

Last Year’s King – The Goblin King – together with Queen October Daye and their esteemed Chancellor, The Last Unicorn, have laid down the insignia of their high office so we have …

The election of this year’s King, Queen and Chancellor of Fantasy Faire!

When it comes to Fantasy, we all have our favorite characters. Some may be good – Gandalf or Harry Potter, Belle or Menolly. Or maybe we love the dark side – Maleficent or Steerpike. Or maybe we enjoy the conflicted – Jamie Lannister or Mrs Coulter.

Whoever is your favorite, you have a chance to nominate them and perhaps see them crowned as King and Queen of Fantasy Faire at the fabulous Fantasy Faire Ball!

What do I do?
First of all, use the form below to nominate your favorite male and female characters.

THE NOMINATIONS WILL CLOSE AT 12 MIDNIGHT AT THE END OF SATURDAY 22nd APRIL.

We will choose the top five male and female characters, and there will be a final vote-off during the Faire itself.

Then the winners will be announced at the April Showers Costume Ball on April 30th.

So who will it be? Corwin or Aragorn? Arya Stark or Nanny Ogg? Tyrion or Frodo? The White Witch or Agatha Heterodyne?

Nominate your favorites today!

But what about your favorite non-human (or human type) characters? Don’t they get a chance too?

Of course they do! There’s an election for Chancellor – and this is for your favorite character who has no elements of human appearance. This means that Ariel (mermaid) and Mr Tumnus (faun) could be King and Queen, but Archimedes (the owl, not the scientist) would be nominated for Chancellor.

So will your Chancellor be Teremaire or Ratty (or Mole, Toad or Badger)? Will it be Reepicheep or Pegasus?

NB Characters should be chosen from works of fantasy which can be written or graphical texts or films, TV or radio shows. We want to be broadly inclusive of genres – thus fairytales, high fantasy, steampunk, urban fantasy, vampire sagas (and others) will all be classified as fantasy.

The King, Queen and Chancellor of Fantasy Faire in 2015!

Please note – last year’s winners, The Goblin King, Queen October Daye and The Last Unicorn, and the winners from 2015, Lord Vetinari, Granny Weatherwax and Greebo the cat, all from the works of Terry Pratchett, are NOT eligible for election this year.

King, Queen and Chancellor of Fantasy Faire 2016

The polls have closed, the votes have been counted and at the Masquerade Ball on May the 1st, the new King, Queen and Chancellor for 2016 were chosen.

King

FF KQC GoblinKing copy

As played by the late, great David Bowie in the movie Labyrinth. The film revolves around 15-year-old Sarah’s (Jennifer Connelly) quest to reach the center of an enormous otherworldly maze to rescue her infant brother Toby, who has been kidnapped by Jareth, the Goblin King (David Bowie)

But, actually, some of you may also have thought of the stunning debut novel by Katherine Addison, The Goblin Emperor, which I cannot recommend too highly. Published in 2014, it received the Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel and was nominated for the Nebula, Hugo and World Fantasy Awards. It tells the story of Maia, a young man of mixed Elven and Goblin heritage, who unexpectedly becomes Emperor of the Elflands, and has to contend with the court’s Byzantine power structure as well as racial and social tension in his realm.

Queen

FF KQC TobyDaye copy

This choice surprised some people who are unfamiliar with the novels of Seanan McGuire, but the October Daye series is a very popular one in the modern urban fantasy genre. Beginning in 2009 with Rosemary and Rue, there are now nine novels published.

At the start of the series, October “Toby” Daye, a changeling who is half human and half fae, has been an outsider from birth. After getting burned by both sides of her heritage, Toby has denied the Faerie world, retreating to a “normal” life. Unfortunately for her, the Faerie world has other ideas…

Chancellor

FF KQC LastUnicorn copy

This character comes from one of the most loved fantasy novels of all time. The Last Unicorn is a fantasy novel written by Peter S. Beagle and published in 1968. It follows the tale of a unicorn, who believes she is the last of her kind in the world and undertakes a quest to discover what has happened to the others.

In 1987, Locus ranked The Last Unicorn number five among the 33 “All-Time Best Fantasy Novels”, based on a poll of subscribers.

Voting for the King, Queen and Chancellor of Fantasy Faire: Who’s winning?

Report as of 12 noon Friday, 29th April

And in news from the Fairelands very own elections … here are the current standing in the contest for King, Queen and Chancellor of Fantasy Faire:

Bear in mind that these are the results of the very earliest primaries; all is still to play for!

King

FF KQC Snape copy

In the lead at the moment is the perhaps surprising figure of Severus Snape with 1,450 Lind … we mean votes.

In second place, is the Goblin King with 1,010 votes.

These two lead the field by a considerable margin.

FF KQC GoblinKing copy  FF KQC Tyrion copy

In third place is Tyrion Lannister with 250 votes.

FF KQC Oberon copy  FF KQC MadHatter copy

He is trailed by Oberon with 150 votes, and The Mad Hatter with 100 votes.

Remember – there is still time for these positions to shift radically!

Queen

In the contest for Queen of Fantasy Faire, we have a slightly surprising leader.

FF KQC TobyDaye copy

Beating out more traditional candidates with 600 votes is the brooding but hugely talented October (Toby) Daye, the heroine of Seanan McGuire‘s October Day series.

FF KQC Maleficent copy  FF KQC Galadriel copy

Her nearest rival is Maleficent with 401 votes, followed by Galadriel with 206.

FF KQC Titania copy  FF KQC FirionaVie copy

Titania and Firiona Vie are currently bringing up the rear with 100 votes and 50 votes respectively.

Chancellor

FF KQC LastUnicorn copy

This competition sees the clearest margin of all at the moment. Charging into the lead is The Last Unicorn with 2,000 votes.

FF 2016 KQC Krosp copy

Closest to that impressive score is Krosp, Emperor of All Cats with 850 votes

The other three candidates are trailing by some margin. The Cheshire Cat has 157 votes, K9 (the mechanical dog from Dr Who) has 56 votes, and Mrs Norris, the cat who was so mean to Harry Potter and his friends, has just 20 votes.

FF KQC CheshireCat small  FF KQC K9 small
 FF KQC Mrs Norris small

But everything could change in the next two days … and it’s all down to YOU.

How do I vote?
RFL kiosks have been set up in the name of each candidate at the Landing Point in Sapphire Mirror Lake. To register a vote, simply pay the kiosk dedicated to your particular candidate. You can pay as much or as little as you want but … the more you pay, the more chance your candidate has of becoming King, Queen or Chancellor.

In the Fairelands, you see, you CAN buy votes, and we’re quite unapologetic about it!

That’s because every Linden that goes into the kiosks for the candidates then goes straight to the American Cancer Society.

When is the deadline?
Voting will close at 5pm SLT on Sunday 1st May (half-way through the fabulous Masquerade Ball. Results will be announced LIVE at the Ball, and posted to the blog soon after.

Do … remember what they say …

Vote early and vote often for the King, Queen and Chancellor of Fantasy Faire!

Greebo makes a late surge in the election for Chancellor … steampunks holding on for King and Queen

In the Fantasy Faire election, of course – voting for the King, Queen and Chancellor of Fantasy Faire (aka your favourite fictional fantasy characters), Greebo the Cat (from the Discoworld Alliance, based on the books by Sir Terry Pratchett) is edging out Krosp, Emperor of Cats (from the Girl Genius Group, represented by characters rpom the gaslamp fantasy Girl Genius).

The gaslamp/steampunk challengers for King and Queen are still holding their own, although the Discworld candidates are still hanging in there, with the rest of the candidates some way behind.

But that could all change today!

Steampunks edge ahead of the Discworld in the Fantasy Faire election!

In the Fantasy Faire election, of course – voting for the King, Queen and Chancellor of Fantasy Faire (aka your favourite fictional fantasy characters), the Steampunks (represented by characters frpom the gaslamp fantasy Girl Genius) are now ediging ahead of The Discworld Alliance (based on the books by Sir Terry Pratchett),

Several independents, however, are making a late showing – with Malefience doing especially well in the voting for Queen.

And in the election for Chancellor, Krosp, the Emperor of Cats (Girl Genius) has overtaken Greebo (Discworld). It’s been a good day for cats in the polls, it seems!

These figures are transitional –

Who will be King, Queen and Chancellor of Fantasy Faire?

In the run up to Fantasy Faire, we asked you to select your favourite characters from fantasy to be chosen as King, Queen and Chancellor of Fantasy Faire.

Well, the nominations are in – and your five top selections are ready to move forward to the vote. Let’s find out who they are!

Vote for the King!

FF-KING1-BKWulf FF-KING2-GILGA FF-KING4-HAVELOCK
FF-KING3-LEGOLAS FF-KING5-TYRION

As you’ll see, we have two characters from the Girl Genius universe – the Wulfenbachs, father and son. Will they split the vote and let another candidate in?

From Discworld we have the Vetinari, Patrician of Ankh-Morpork. All powerful and more than a little sinister, will he be the people’s choice?

Lord of the Rings supplies the Elvish candidate for King, Legolas, while our final candidate is Tyrion Lannister from A Song of Fire and Ice / A Game of Thrones. Tyrion is the sole representative of this fantasy element – but with Lannister gold to back him, no-one would rule him out!

Vote for the Queen!

FF-QUEEN3-AGATHA FF-QUEEN4-GALADRIEL FF-QUEEN2-GRANNY
FF-QUEEN5-MALEFICENT FF-QUEEN1-ZANTA

The Queens represent a similar range of fantasy genres – but now we have fairy tales popularised by Disney – or is that the right term for the anti-heroine Maleficient?

From Girl Genius we again have two characters – Agatha Heterodyne and Queen Zantiabraxus. Will they split the steampunk vote?

From Lord of the Rings we have our second Elvish nominee – Galadriel. And last, but definitely not least, we have Granny Weatherwax, that source of common sense and magical skills (not to mention headology) from Lancre in the Discworld.

Vote for the Chancellor!

FF-CHANC4-GENIE FF-CHANC2-GREEBO
FF-CHANC1-KROSP
FF-CHANC3-TREEBRD FF-CHANC5-VONPINN

The Chancellors are drawn from a similarity variety. There’s the Genie from Aladdin (immortalised by the late, great Robin Williams in the Disney movie), and there’s Greebo, Nanny Ogg’s cat from the Discworld (nursing a secret passion to be ginger).

Once more, there are two Girl Genius characters nominated: this time Krosp (our second cat nomination!) and Vonn Pinn – looking human but really a clank – that world’s robotic forms.

And finally, from the Lord of the Rings, we have the Ent, Treebeard.

Which will you vote for?

You can visit the vendors and place your vote in a special gallery under the waves at Poseidons Abyss.

OR you can pay via Convio.
