The Caverns of Fear: Part 2

“This is a place of death” said MIriamne as they entered.
“Where dark things gather and Gibber…” Said Ktahdn.
“Yessss….” Miriamne let out a slow, echoing hiss, her voice changing from the weight of the magic of the Gems of Defense that she bears, now all seven.

Miss Phire, Bast, and Miriamne

Today our adventurers had a nasty surprise! There was no protest at all, in fact a rather friendly wave from the gargoyles as they rushed further down than they had ever been, following Miriamne and seeking to head off the Snake Cultist, who has dubbed himself ‘The Betrayed’. She assembled the others before the entry to the last cavern, and begged that they hold the line. Then came the cultist…and he had multiplied! And more! Tanith had joined The Cultists as their healer! They had come to a standoff, and their first true battle against each other.

Tanith and the CultistS!
Both sides pounded upon one another, primarily with spells. XIao Xiao hurled her lightning. Miriamne tried to keep up a shield to not allow the cultists to pass. Bast was badly injured and very nearly killed when the cultist animated skeletons who performed a poison arrow attack on her. Several adventurers were injured, also including Xiao, and Miss Phire was also nearly slain by another of the linked Cultists in the ensuing melee. Bast begged of her Goddess while rolling in agony to heal her.

The Cultists Attack!

Miriamne cast a mighty heal, but could not also maintain the shield in that spot. The Cultists joined together their power, in spite of Miriamne’s cry to break them apart. A terrible sound came from the sucking emptiness of the one Cultist’s spell. Miss Phire covered her ears as Miriamne threw up a shield of dancing lights and incredible power.

Xiao Xiao

The Magic of the four cultists, joined together from different universes by the power of the Gems, unites, and a void of blackness attacks the shield.

Prince Bobby and his mighty Slavic squatting, and great magics aside, they could not hold the line there, but had to go below, by the final gate to the temple. As they did, Xiao’s final strike on the one cultist brought the first fatality. He had been the one in the beginning to laugh an empty laugh and say Like a flood we will come and you will see no end I hope you resolve is strong enough for that.”

Extradimensional Cultist _Clone_

By the time that the prime Cultist descended, he was again alone and realized this! He then narrowed his eyes and screamed words that no human should know, words that only those cursed by creation itself would utter! Black tears he had shed upon the ground forced the skeletons to become as giants, and to attack Miss. Phire with bony, poisoned fists.

Miriamne and the Defenders at the Final Gate.

Miriamne hurls an attack at the thing, and Miss Phire sends a vine attack at the cultist that misfires. Prince Bobby comes up from a most dignified squat, and nails the cultist where it hurts the most. That happens twice!

Ktahdn and Miss Phire by the Final Gate.

It does not however stop the Cultist. He uses a skeleton golem attack to force Miriamne to drop the shield in favor of stopping it before it can destroy her comrades, and the Cultist slips through the gate!

The Prime Cultist.

In the race for Chancellor, Hedwig and the White Rabbit are closing the gap on Rhiow the cat (who has gained NO votes since yesterday). Has the cat lost his momentum? We’ll find out tomorrow when the results are announced during the Live Auction.

Who will win? Only YOU and your Lindens (I mean votes!) can decide.

Meet Our World Builders: Haveit Neox & Lilia Artis

Haveit Neox and Lilia Artis, the world-builders of Opal Flight.

Haveit Neox and Lilia Artis, the world builders of Opal Flight, share with us their reasons to return and create worlds for the Faire, the Story of Opal Flight, and their favourite Faire-memories!

You two have grown to become a part of the Fairelands with your realms that are perfect for arts and entertainment, as a stage for performances and as inspiring exhibitions in their own right. Do the realms you’ve brought to life connect to each other in any fashion, is there any lore or story or theme that they share, or are they all their own separate worlds?

Haveit: Our use of the mythological centaurs once again return to Fantasy Faire this year. By revisiting previous themes, it gives a sense of ongoing history to the sim. We also like to expand the mythological cast in the sim’s story, and this year, Lilia has introduced her harpies who have their own tale.

Lilia: With the expansion we try to achieve a working balance of the known, like meeting an old friend who makes you feel comfortable, yet also bring in new aspects, the unknown, like a new acquaintance that makes you feel excited and curious. Somehow we feel you need both, in life it might be the reliability and the challenge.

What is new in your Second Life, what have you been up to the last year?

Lilia: My SL life changed quite a bit since last year and I needed to cut down my time in the virtual world. I am still trying to figure out what to focus on here and what changes to make but the road to take is beginning to show itself. Somehow Fantasy Faire was an eye opener in many ways. It felt wonderful to work for a good cause and with likeminded people who give their best to make the Faire a special, unique event. And, life presenting its strange twists, shortly after the Faire a family member got diagnosed with cancer which came like a shock, as to everyone. I guess I don’t have to describe what it means for the family and how it affects our lives. So this year I am not just working for a good cause, I also do relay and the work for Fantasy Faire definitely has become my priority in SL.

Haveit: For the past year, I have been very busy working on two RL art projects and creating exhibits in Second Life. Presently, I am showing my exhibit “Bleeding Books” at the Split Screen Installation Space. Ironically Bleeding Books will come down at the same time as Fantasy Faire, so I will have to say farewell twice.

How was Opal Flight born? What inspired it, what is its story?

Haveit: Shortly after Fantasy Faire ended last year, and we’d received a warm invite to return the following year, Lilia had an idea almost immediately and most enthusiastically. She told me her idea of huge garden plants dominating a mostly white surface world, and drew out a simple plan to show me. I gravitated to her idea right away. She knows how I love to build under water, and suggested we make it a fun place for the Second Life Mer community to explore, and that I bring back my centaurs into the sunken civilization. Having the story clearly laid out, the next step was to share in the building and creation of textures, which we both shared above and below the ocean. Lilia would describe the story best, as it is hers.

Lilia: The long version of the story is already published on the Fantasy Faire website, on the Opal Flight page. The short version is that this is a story about mourning a loss, craving what you never had and how to come to terms with both. It includes the various ways of help we get on our journey, the good and the not so good. All this is clad in scales and feathers as the main protagonists are fish and harpies.

Do you have favourite Faire memories? What are you looking forward to most this year in the Fairelands?

Haveit: Last year, a group of fantasy avatars as well as centaurs, surprised Lilia and I at the sim we built. Our story was about the lost centaurs of the ancients, but through the magic of the virtual world, and many real hearts, the sight of a group of marvelous creatures flooding into the sim brought both Lilia and I to tears – no exaggeration. She and I were on Skype at that moment, and shared our deep delight with each other. There are many fine memories from the past, Fantasy Faire’s community is ripe with all kinds of wonders. As this year’s Faire begins, I’m already having lots of fun. Our neighbors have been great! While the sim builders were setting up, at about the half way mark, I noticed a rather amazing colossus on Fallen Sands. This is a mechanical bird, craning its house-sized head well into Opal Flight, displaying its grandeur in many subtle tones of rust. This metallic visitor needed sustenance, for its belly was plainly empty. I transformed one of my little birds into a like sized giant, as it offers a tasty rusted cog, large enough to satisfy the hugest appetite. On the other side of Opal Flight, is the border with Mudrana. Their green cliffs open into a mysterious path, with fine landscaping tempting the eye just paces ahead. I love working on sim borders, blending them in, especially when my neighbors have such original ideas! The Fairelands is full of creativity no matter where you venture. Certainly this is true of the performances as well. From plays, dances, story readings, fine art in the galleries, sim tours, particle shows, and on and on, the Fairelands provide visitors with ample fine entertainment and education. Once a year we all have this opportunity to enjoy the rich content of Fantasy Faire, knowing well that it’s impossible to see it all, yet anything you catch will be superb.

Lilia: I guess my most favourite memory is that of the centaur stampede too. But actually I have so many fine memories of the past event that they weave a colourful picture, almost like a unique quilt with its own history. I miss last year’s builds and wish I could dwell there one more time and I welcome this years’ new treasures which I will keep in my heart together with the old ones. And I love the performances. Of course we also watch them as sim builders to see if the stage we designed works and what needs change or improvement were we to do another event. But I am always totally floored by the passionate creativity of the shows. And I guess being a sheep in one of them might become one of our favourite memories. After all we stick to the animal tradition: from centaur to sheep… To finish my collection of wonderful memories I have to mention one encounter this year that was very special to me. When I entered Faireland Junction, I felt flung back into childhood. I grew up in a forest and to me as a child it was full of magic, life and beauty. Its serenity filled me with awe no human build ever since could. Seeing the Junction, it suddenly was right back and in front of my eyes, that special atmosphere only huge forests possess. I am very grateful for the time jump I experienced and felt reconnected, as much as I feel grateful for the numerous positive experiences Fantasy Faire offers each year.

Thank you, Haveit and Lilia, for taking the time to talk with us. Thank you for bringing your worlds to the Fairelands and sharing their stories with us, year after year!

Daily Recap: Friday

Mudrana – picture by Alisaundra Andel

Friday is always a sneaky weekend-starter. One moment you’re still in a regular week-day and suddenly you’re zooming into the weekend!

Seanan McGuire returned to the Literary Festival and did a reading of her short story Lost, a captivating story of children vanishing mysteriously, a mix of Pied Piper with Peter Pan, full of enchantment and longing.

Otherwise the Literary Festival held Fantasy Writing Prompts and a Short Story Discussion group, and Region Tours to Chaddul Ro and The Spirit Pool.

There were dance performances on the stage of Opal Flight, DJ parties on the deck of The FaireChylde, roleplay across the Fairelands, even an OOC party of The NeoVictoria Project where they celebrated the conclusion of their storyline.

The main event of the day was of course the Jail and Bail of Alia Baroque, the creator of Fallen Gods Inc. and the world-builder of The Rose.  This year the Pawlice hadn’t so much caught him as stumbled upon the scene as The Rose herself had captured her gardener in sharp growing thorns.

Never ones to waste a perfectly good capture, the Tiny Sheriffs set out to list all the charges against Mr. Baroque, including but not limited to: not having enough body hair and turning people purple.

The Rose’s demands were, however, quite different. She wished to keep her control of the young buds, to glow in the sun just as she was, and keep the upstarts caged. It was up to the Faire Folk to decide whether the city would get her desire, or if the young roses would be liberated from cages to bloom free. After an intense struggle the Tyrant lost her hold, and the young roses were promised freedom to grow and bloom and preen in the daylight!

Each sufficient vote in the RFL kiosks gave the voting Fairelander an exclusive skin to reflect their choice, and this is also how the votes were tallied. Altogether by the end of the event the kiosks were around 360,000 lindens, but (and you didn’t hear this from me, it’s a secret!) they might have been (completely accidentally) left out for those who wanted a chance to get the exclusive skins, but couldn’t get to the event, and by the next morning the freed young roses had gathered 202,772 lindens and The Rose’s Tyranny 183,097 lindens, altogether 385,869 lindens. Well done, Faire Folk!

The Rose lost more than her hold over city, she also lost the captured Gardener, who transformed into his highest form to escape the thorns! (And to lead a conga and drive a bus.)

Our last Saturday of the year is naturally busy packed!

The event you don’t want to miss is the Jail & Bail of Clover Dezno and Druscilla Ferraris 8 – 11 AM at The Hill. These two tinies somehow always end up in trouble and get arrested by the Pawlice for… littering, drinking, running with scissors, forcing Faire sponsors into shotgun weddings, take your pick of the charges! Come see what they are accused of this time, and whether the charges will hold! Music for the court case is provided by DJ Gem Sunkiller.

In The Literary Festival we have The Poets’ Plunder 6 – 7 AM, Fantasy Writing Prompts 9 – 10 AM and Speculative Fiction with Simeon Beresford 1 – 2 PM. The LitFest Region Tours travel to The Spirit Pool 12 – 1 PM and to The Rose 6 – 7 PM and 8 – 9 PM. All the Literary Festival events take place in Kakushi Pasu, even the Tours gather there before venturing forth.

The sparkles keep flying in Opal Flight as the dancers stun and amaze Faire Folk! Today we have MaHal 7 -8 AM, Shadows Silhouettes 9 – 10 AM, ChangHigh Trinity Sisters Fireshow 11 AM – 12 PM, The Avilion Merballet Company 1 – 2 PM and Misfit Dance and Performance Art 5 – 6 PM.

While you are in Opal Flight, take a look at our Silent Auction located in there! Great deals and one of a kind items available for your bidding pleasure!

Saturday is the last day for our roleplay storylines. They wrap up their stories in exciting finales and complete their journeys, some of them even with a DJ to provide soundtracks and to party with!

Today finishing their adventures are 10 AM – 12 PM Ynys Seamaide at The Spirit Pool, 12 – 2 PM Outbreak at San Mora, 2 – 4 PM The Lilypods with DJ Zander Greene at Mudrana and 4 – 6 PM Sanctuary with DJ AineMari Flanagan at Raven’s Perch. We will also have our last roleplay class 7 – 8 PM at Fallen Sands.

The weekend just begun, come spend it in the Fairelands!

Check either Calendar of Events or Faire Happenings for daily event details!

Entertaining The Godfrog

With the sunrise gem found and the Unweaver increasing his efforts, Loki of the Lilypods decided that the best way to keep the Godfrog awake was to keep him entertained. He arranged a noisy race on the back of pondskippers.

Azura and Scooby

The children cannot let their Godfrog falter now, when victory and defeat are both so close at hand.

The Lilypods need everyone to join them Saturday in Mudrana at two pm as they attempt to break open the Stone Frog, and put an end to an ancient tragedy and save their land from a dark end.

Roleplay News on the Outbreak at San Mora : April 27th – 28th

Thursday April 27th
Day 4 – Red Handed

Using a moments distraction, two of our survivors took the initiative to figure out what was really going on behind the scenes of San Mora. While the rest of the group was occupied with the sudden collapse of one of their own, the two explorers made their way deep into the heart of the medical labs.. and what they found there chilled them to the bone.

Blood… Bodies… And the detailed records of horrific experimentation done to the poor victims of the San Mora scientist. Those poor few who had survived the initial outbreak of infection had gathered behind the walls of San Mora, seeking shelter and safety with the armed and organized EBDA to protect them… instead, they were subjected to cruel tests that unfailingly led to each of their deaths.

Poking their noses into the depraved doings of the San Morans and the startling revelations they found was enough to convince the explorers of their need to flee, but the depraved and determined soldiers of the EBDA (Emergency Biological Defense Agency) caught them red handed and took them into custody, leaving the other Arklay survivors at a loss to their location and scrambling to conceal their growing unease from the ever watchful EBDA and San Mora scientist.

Friday April 28th
Day 5 – Everything’s F**ked

A long night for two of our survivors held captive deep in the heart of the medical laboratories. Brutalized and beaten throughout the night, our two captives devised a plan for escape to warn their fellow Arklay survivors of the depravity and violence taking place behind the seemingly welcome walls of San Mora.

The remainder of the Arklay crew is stuck between a rock and crazy place, surrounded by armed soldiers and ominously smiling scientist they walk a knifes edge , balanced between discovery and escape with only their lies and determination to shield them.

After a struggle, the two captive made their escape.. one of too warn the other with help of a turncloak EBDA soldier, the other off to seek a bloody and painful revenge on her tormentor.. (R.I.P Mr. Snood)

Our final day will take place April 29th @ 12 pm – 2 pm SLT

Join us for the conclusion of Outbreak @ San Mora and discover for yourself if the visitors from Akrlay can survive the San Mora “cure”.

Today’s News of Ynys Seamaide at The Spirit Pool: 04/28/17

Friday April 28th
The Final Plan

Yesterday, the Envoys of Seamaide used the found artifacts of the elements to conjure the God of the Sea, who told them what would be required to defeat the circling dragon and to use its heart to turn back the Taint and save the world from sure destruction.

With a mere day and a half left before the prophecy of the Gollum comes true and the Taint destroys the cage holding the Femorians, the Envoys and those from other lands who have come in search of answers met at the Spirit Pool. On this day, they discussed the risk that the child would face when she used Lugh’s slingstone to slay the dragon. This day, they used not their brawn but their brains as all gave ideas for distracting the dragon and accomplishing the task Lugh had revealed to them. Some questioned the wisdom of the ideas put forth, and doubt crept into the minds of some, but in the end, the group agreed they could not give up.

Before the Envoys and the foreigners left the Spirit Pool, each seeking repose until the morrow to prepare for the final task, they agreed on a plan and set the time for reconvening at 10am SLT, Saturday, April 29th. The Envoys need the citizens of all realms to help them destroy the creeping darkness that has spread across the world.
