“New Sand Stories” by Ktahdn Vesuvino
1.30pm – 2.30pm
Ktahdn says:
“The best way to see a sand sculpture is to be on the beach, watching as the sand is piled and carved. Hear the breaking waves, feel the spray on your face, taste the salt on your lips, feel the sand under your bare feet. For most people, opportunity is infrequent.
This show brings the beach to SL, using the resources I have here. It is woven from three main components, each of which has fascinated me for many years. Photography came first, after I inherited a camera and became interested in visual composition. Writing started as something done for myself and grew beyond that limitation. Sand sculpture was an engineering experiment and, through years, became more wide-ranging because I enjoyed doing it.
“Time is the sliding window in which I’ve built this program. It starts in the fall of 2018 and runs through early March 2020. Some of the sculptures sparked their own poems. Other poems came from less immediate roots, as in between sculptures I think about what they’re made from and how I make them. There’s a shared common core of imagery, word-images, light-images, sand-images. All are necessary.”

Background:
“I made my first arch of sand in June of 1982. It was a personal project, driven by curiosity, and done when I had the opportunity. In ensuing years I continued to explore what was possible. It became a kind of dance of learning technique, engineering, and making better tools in a process that is still continuing.
“There have been many changes in my sand practice through those years. One thing has not changed: People are curious. They ask questions. I believe that a decent question deserves a good answer, which pushes me to better understand what I”m doing, so that I can talk about it.
“It is thanks to curious friends that I have photographs, reports, a database, and poems about sand sculpture. Thanks to another friend, I have a means to display the photographs in Second Life.
In May of 2018 I started reading poems aloud, due to an encounter at Fantasy Faire. In June I performed a sand sculpture program at Seanchai Library that was at the edge of my ability. I was encouraged to do more, and while it may not feel like practice, the experience adds up. This show is built upon that encouraging foundation, and takes advantage of experience gained.”

LitFest Tour – Elemaria
5:00pm – 6:00pm
As far back as time, Elemaria has been. For it was formed by the elements in equal measure. Water, air, earth, and fire. Each element gave the best part of itself to create a place of nature, harmony, and peace. Humankind eventually settled there and built a peaceful village, and a shining castle for their beloved king and queen. They tended the land with care and devotion. But the elements felt something was missing, and so decided to bestow upon them, a fifth element. The element of spirit. This force breathed creative energy into all things. Elemaria is a realm of light, love, and the healing power of creativity.

Where the ground is thick with fog and dark moss-covered trees loom overhead menacingly. You see movement in the shadows from the corner of your eye. As you turn to validate what you saw, it vanishes, leaving behind doubt. Was it only the fog? Or perhaps the sway of the moss in the soft breeze? The moss gets thicker and the fog swirls hypnotically the longer one lingers here. Ghosts of your past, future, and everything intertwined haunt you. Is this real? Had the path truly been so dark? What would happen if you reached the light? Listen to the whispers in the shadows,to the buzz of the dragonflies, and unravel your destined path. Choices -will-be made. But do you keep to the safe path; or wander off into the halls of insanity? Welcome to the Lamented Fens, a swampland inhabited by mysterious piscine creatures. The Dragon, and other story-poems by Ktahdn Vesuvino
10:00am – 11:00am
Ktahdn says:
*A year ago, at a writing dash, the prompt led me to think about dragons. Who really knows the heart of a dragon? They’ve been maligned, they’ve been worshiped. What is life really like for a dragon, in a world ever more overrun by people?’ Even more important, what could I say about a dragon that hadn’t already been said? I thought about it and an idea waved its tail at me. I’ve learned to pay attention.
“A month or so later I realized there was another point of view to the story, so I wrote a sequel. This one took more surprising turns.
“A story written as a poem has a rhythm of its own. Texture counts, and clarity too as there is no redundancy.. I also enjoy reading them aloud. Today I will read selections from a growing collection.”

Staying Open
Poems and photographs under the shadow of coronavirus by Ktahdn Vesuvino
9:30am – 11:00am
Ktahdn says:
“Through early March I did 9 hand-built sand sculptures. Later in the month I met two men who were also making sand works on Venice Beach, although theirs were much bigger than mine. I liked their energy, so I decided to join them.
“Coronavirus was coming into common awareness. I could feel the pressure. I joined in the beach works, my small but detailed sculpture dwarfed by theirs, but still contributing.
“We made people happy. it felt like a bubble in the creeping darkness.
“And then the officials closed the beach. The governmental world pressed in ever closer, and hysteria was never far away. I cheated and went to the beach anyway, as I like walking in the rain and we did have the blessing of several storms pass through.
“I also went to Milk Wood and wrote more poems. Then I rewrote them for this program. It’s a set of six poems with accompanying photographs, documenting an intense time.”

The Book is on sale in kiosks at Ambigula and by the Book Tables in the Drifts of Amanesis.

The person behind the keyboard holds an advanced degree in Writing Genre Fiction from Seton Hill University in Greensburg, PA, USA. And then you come to the Junction … This area is a cooler and more contemplative region than Drifts of Anamnesis, although the regions merge seamlessly.
