In 2020 COVID-19 shook the world, bringing with it sickness and death across the globe and bringing life for many to a standstill. What it didn’t stop was cancer. With the medical advances of science and technology a vaccine has been made to fight COVID-19, but for all the years cancer and its many strains have been around, there is still no definitive cure. The best hope is early detection.
According to the American Cancer Society “In 2021, there will be an estimated 1.9 million new cancer cases diagnosed and 608,570 cancer deaths in the United States.” While the disease targets an individual, the impact touches their family and their friends. There are 100 different types of cancer and there is not a cure for any of them. Chances are that someone knows someone who had, or has been, affected by cancer. It’s time to make a change.
In SecondLife there is an event that brings together thousands of people for a couple weeks of shopping, music, and fun, all with the goal to raise money and cancer awareness. The event is called Fantasy Faire and as of this post, they have raised L$14,219,599 ($56,878 USD), all of which will go towards cancer research.
Cancer seems to run in my family: from my great-grandmother, both of my grandmothers, and my own mother, have all died from cancer. Aside from them I have a couple family friends who are fighting hard in their cancer battles while they are still in low stages, and a very good friend of mine who is living life on borrowed time.
What can we do to help them? What can we do to help others from having to go through this? We can donate. If you can’t donate you can help spread awareness by sharing and telling others. We can make a difference. We can bring about change. We can find a cure for cancer.
