Avariel Falcon, the resident apple hunter of the Fairelands, is sponsoring Fantasy Faire this year with her team the Dark Unicorns of Lovelace. She shares with us her long time involvement with the Fairelands, introduces her team and provides some hints on what might be happening in the Fairelands this year.
This is your first year sponsoring Fantasy Faire. What made you decide to become a sponsor?
I am a long term supporter of Fantasy Faire. It’s well known among my friends that I vanish from my usual haunts for a week around the start of May as I camp out the Fairelands for the duration of the event. With each year that passes I tend to get a bit more involved with Fantasy Faire so this year I decided to go a bit further and become an event sponsor.
How did you become a unicorn?
There was a bit of an adventure involving a rogue portal, a deranged psychopathic dinosaur, a penguin and Antarctica… At least that is the in-character reason. Out of character it’s just what I am, so when it became possible to make a decent unicorn avatar in Second Life that is what I became in-world. Many thanks to the wonderful creators behind Water Horse and Breeders Choice who weave their meshly and sculpty magic and make it possible.
Tell us about your team, is it really all unicorns like the name suggests?
We are not all unicorns, in fact I am the only unicorn, although we are open for others to join if they wish.
The Dark Unicorns of Lovelace were named as such because of the role-play background of our sim. I am a member of the Lovelace Institute and leader of the Aquila III Expedition. The scientists, engineers and adventurers who joined the expedition started being informally referred to as the dark unicorns of Lovelace and it sort of stuck.
Aquila III was once a great research centre before the collapse of the old empire and the abandonment of the facility. Now the Dark Unicorns are exploring the old ruins, trying to discover technological wonders from the past and restore the outpost to its former glory to improve our understanding of the aether and make use of the old aetheric generators to broadcast power to the Steamlands.
What do you plan to do in the Fairelands this year? Are you involved in the roleplay events again? Tell us teasers!
I am involved with the role-play again, once more I will be the somewhat befuddled Guardian of Air who will help guide the Rickety Weasels in their quest, this time to save a new magical land from a terrible fate! I will also get up to my usual photoblogging adventures on my Flickr feed as I have in previous years.
What calls you to fantasy? When was the first time you encountered the genre and realized you enjoyed it?
I grew up in a family that loves sci-fi and fantasy fiction, reading books by authors like David Eddings, Raymond E. Feist, J.R.R. Tolkien, Ursula K. Le Guin and many others. Following a Druidic path I grew to find that fantasy is not always quite as fictional as it may at first appear. There is a little magic in everything.
Do you have a favourite Faire memory?
I have no idea where to begin with this question, so much gets packed into the week long events that it’s a huge explosion of favourite moments and exciting adventures! From rampaging around the lands in Alia’s crazy Love Shack bus to meeting giants in mysterious landscapes, you never really know what Fantasy Faire will throw at you!
What are you looking forward to most this year?
Exploring! Fantasy Faire always has wonderful sim builds!
Meeting people! You always meet wonderful people at Fantasy Faire!
Events! Jail and bail to bands of tinies playing steel pans, always something interesting happening!
The Hunt! Noble quests and adventure!
The Unexpected! Every year there is a surprise or two!
Thank you, Avariel, for taking the time to share the wonders of the unicorn life with us. Thank you for being such a big part of the Faire spirit.
